Mary Kilpatrick

Broadway Actress · Painter · Published Illustrator

Mary Kilpatrick has spent her life telling stories that matter — on Broadway stages, in a book used in shelters worldwide, and now on canvas. Her paintings are vivid, emotionally charged works centered on women's lives: their strength, their tenderness, their resilience, and their joy.

She performed on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theatre in the long-running revival of Oh! Calcutta! (1976–1989). National tour credits include The Pirates of Penzance, Bye Bye Birdie, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. That theatrical training carried directly into her painting — her figures carry gesture, weight, and emotional presence that only comes from years of performing.

With her husband, writer Howard Schor, she created A Place for Starr: A Story of Hope for Children Experiencing Family Violence — a book that sold over 10,000 copies and continues to be used in shelters and counseling settings worldwide. She co-founded BEAT Children's Theatre, honored by the Oregon State Legislature in 2015.

Many of Mary's paintings are mixed media — real feathers, gemstones, lace, silk ribbon, and cotton physically embedded in the canvas. Each original is a singular, three-dimensional object.

Before You Buy

How do I buy an original painting?

Use the inquiry form below or email art@marykilpatrick.com. The studio will respond with condition notes, framing options, and shipping details. Private viewings available by appointment.

Are prints available?

Yes. Numbered limited edition prints on 100% cotton rag, acid-free fine art paper. Choose from Somerset Velvet, Hot Press, or Cold Press. Each ships with a signed, numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Maximum 100 prints per painting — once sold out, permanently closed.

What makes these paintings different?

A performer's eye for the human figure, an illustrator's gift for narrative, and an advocate's authenticity — almost never found together in one artist. Many works are also mixed media: physically built with real feathers, jewels, beads, and lace embedded in the canvas.

Why own an original rather than a print?

Several originals — Earth Mother, Cotton Candy, Josephine Baker, Personas — are mixed media objects with real materials in the canvas. A print is beautiful. The original is a physical object that commands a room. When you own it, you own the only one that will ever exist.

What is giclée?

Giclée (zhee-KLAY) is the fine art printing standard used by galleries and museums worldwide. Archival pigment inks on 100% cotton rag, acid-free paper. The difference from standard prints is immediately apparent — the paper has weight, the colors have depth, the print reads as art.

Do you ship nationwide?

Yes. Prints ship nationwide via insured carrier with tracking — 3–5 business days production. Originals also ship nationwide with crating and insurance. The studio will provide all shipping details on inquiry.
